He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom in July 2003. He subsequently obtained his Master of Science in Comparative Politics (Empire) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom in November 2004.
He commenced his career in political science and sociology in the UK House of Commons/Lower House of Parliament of the United Kingdom in 2004 as a Parliamentary Researcher before moving to Washington, D.C., United States of America in 2005 to join the World Bank as a Public Sector Consultant.
Upon returning to Malaysia, he worked at the United Nations Development Programme in 2006 as a Governance Consultant. In 2007, he joined the KRA Group as a Political Researcher before becoming a Research Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.
In 2006, he co-founded a Malaysia Think Tank which, in 2010, evolved into Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS). He also serves as advisor/patron to numerous educational and cultural organisations.
As an Eisenhower Fellow, he has been selected for various leadership programmes by the Governments of Australia, France and the European Union. He is a Trustee of Yayasan Munarah, Yayasan Chow Kit, IDEAS Autism Centre, Chopin Society of Malaysia, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Genovasi Foundation.
Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin is currently the Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Omesti Berhad, a company listed on the Main Market of Bursa Securities as well as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Deutsche Bank (Malaysia) Berhad.
